President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former Nigerian leader, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as he marks his 89th birthday on March 5. The President praised Obasanjo’s long-standing contributions to Nigeria, Africa, and global diplomacy.
In a goodwill message, Tinubu described the former president as a prominent statesman whose influence has shaped Nigeria’s political and national development over several decades.
The President highlighted Obasanjo’s service as Nigeria’s military Head of State between 1976 and 1979, noting his role in overseeing the transition to civilian rule in 1979. He also acknowledged Obasanjo’s later return to leadership as the country’s civilian president from 1999 to 2007 during the Fourth Republic.
Tinubu further recalled Obasanjo’s involvement in Nigeria’s civil war and his efforts in defending the nation’s unity. He also referenced the former leader’s period of imprisonment during military rule after speaking against authoritarian governance.
According to the President, Obasanjo has continued to contribute to national discourse through public commentary, books, and policy interventions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s political and economic development.
Tinubu said the elder statesman’s experience and engagement in national affairs reflect his commitment to the progress of Nigeria and the wider African continent.
The President prayed for continued good health, strength, and wisdom for Obasanjo as he continues to offer guidance in national and international matters.
