American pop singer Britney Spears has been arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence. The 44-year-old was taken into custody on the evening of March 4 and later released the following morning after being booked by local authorities.
Law enforcement records show that Spears was arrested by officers from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and processed around 3 a.m. on Wednesday. She was handcuffed at the time of the arrest before being formally booked and released from custody a few hours later.
The singer is expected to appear in court on May 4 in connection with the incident.
The arrest occurred shortly after reports indicated that Spears had obtained a restraining order against a man from Louisiana who allegedly harassed her over several years beginning in 2013.
This is not the first legal issue involving the singer. In 2007, Spears was arrested in Los Angeles following an alleged hit-and-run involving a parked vehicle. The case was later resolved after she compensated the car owner for damages.
Spears has remained largely out of the music industry in recent years. In early 2024, she announced that she would not return to recording following her financial independence after the end of a long-running conservatorship previously overseen by her father.
In December 2025, the singer also sold the rights to her music catalogue to independent publisher Primary Wave in a deal valued at about $200 million. The agreement transferred ownership of her catalogue to the company while marking one of the most significant music rights sales involving the pop star.
