he Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Obubra I State Constituency, Dickson Agbor, indefinitely over allegations of domestic violence. The decision followed a formal motion and plenary deliberation by lawmakers. An investigative committee has been set up to examine the matter.
Reports indicate the alleged incident occurred on Saturday, February 28, 2028, at the Assembly quarters. Journalist Agba Jalingo alleged that the lawmaker assaulted his wife during a dispute linked to claims of infidelity.
The suspension was approved on Thursday, March 5, after a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo. Lawmakers described the alleged conduct as inconsistent with the ethical expectations of public office and resolved to act to protect the institution’s integrity.
Following deliberations, the House directed that Agbor be barred from all legislative duties pending the outcome of an inquiry. An ad hoc committee was mandated to investigate the allegations and submit findings for further legislative action. The lawmaker was subsequently escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms in compliance with the resolution.
Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, said the Assembly remains committed to discipline and institutional credibility. He stated that members must uphold standards that reflect public trust and warned that misconduct capable of damaging the legislature’s reputation would not be tolerated.
The Assembly confirmed that the suspension will remain in effect until the investigative committee concludes its assignment and reports back to the House.
Earlier, Bassey Otu and his wife, Eyoanwan Otu, criticised the alleged incident, describing the reported actions as irresponsible.
In a separate statement, the lawmaker’s wife, Glory Agbor, appealed for privacy, stating that the family had resolved its internal differences. She said their marriage remains intact and urged the public to refrain from further scrutiny. She also issued an apology to her husband and family and announced her withdrawal from the Legislators’ Wives Association.
