Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has stated that the ruling All Progressives Congress currently controls 31 governorship seats across Nigeria, adding that more governors are expected to join the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor made the remarks in Benin City while receiving defectors from opposition political parties who recently joined the APC. He also told Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to worry about campaigning in Edo State for the 2027 presidential election.
Okpebholo said the party’s growing number of governors reflects its expanding political influence nationwide. He noted that additional defections are expected as the next election cycle approaches.
Recent political developments have seen several governors from opposition parties join the APC. Among them are Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, and Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State.
Also reported to have joined the APC is Abba Kabir Yusuf, who previously belonged to the New Nigeria Peoples Party and governs Kano State.
The defections come amid ongoing leadership disagreements within the Peoples Democratic Party, which has experienced internal divisions in recent months. The crisis has led to the departure of several members, including lawmakers from the National Assembly.
Despite the recent exits, the PDP leadership has maintained that the party remains a strong opposition force and continues to play a major role in Nigeria’s political landscape.
