Adamu Abubakar, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development. His resignation comes days after Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
In a letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to the governor through the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar formally stepped down from the state executive council. The letter did not state the reason for his decision.
Governor Fintiri had on Friday announced his departure from the PDP to the APC in a statewide broadcast. He stated that members of his cabinet and party structure in the state were moving with him to the ruling party.
Within 24 hours of the announcement, 22 commissioners and special advisers in the state publicly declared their defection to the APC.
In a statement issued Monday night by his personal assistant and media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro, Abubakar expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve in what he described as a strategic position.
He acknowledged the confidence placed in him during his tenure and described the experience as a significant honour. The former commissioner also pledged continued support for the administration’s developmental objectives.
Abubakar extended gratitude to his father, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, for his support and encouragement throughout his time in office.
He further commended the permanent secretaries of the Works and Energy ministries, alongside directors, engineers and other staff, for their commitment to infrastructure development across Adamawa State.
The former commissioner also appreciated the people of Jada, his hometown, for their support and prayers during his service.
According to the statement, Abubakar maintained that his resignation does not signal a withdrawal from public service but represents a transition toward other avenues of contributing to the state’s growth and unity.
