President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Lamido Abubakar Yuguda for appointment as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The nomination is subject to confirmation by the Senate.
The development was disclosed on Wednesday in an official statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The presidency said the move aligns with Section 8(1) of the CBN Act, 2007, which authorizes the President to appoint the apex bank’s governor and deputy governors pending legislative approval.
Yuguda’s nomination comes shortly after former CBN Deputy Governor Bala Bello was appointed Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.
President Tinubu urged the nominee to approach the role with professionalism and a strong commitment to supporting Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.
Yuguda previously served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 2020 to 2024. His career spans banking regulation, financial supervision, and international economic policy.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University in 1983 and later obtained a master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham in 1991.
Yuguda is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
He began his professional career at the CBN in 1984 as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department. Between 1997 and 2001, he worked as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund before returning to the apex bank.
Following his return, he rose through the ranks to become Director of the Reserve Management Department. He retired from the CBN in 2016 after serving six years in that capacity.
