President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reappointed Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi as Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for another five-year term. The Senate has also pledged to conclude constitutional amendments for state police before the end of 2026, while fresh security incidents were recorded in Plateau and Kaduna states.
The Presidency confirmed that Dr Audi’s renewed tenure as head of the NSCDC took effect on February 27, 2026. The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement issued on Saturday.
On the same day, President Tinubu received former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (retd.), at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting was disclosed in a brief statement accompanied by official photographs.
International travel disruptions have intensified as the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran continues to affect global aviation. Several airlines, including Air France, Air India, Turkish Airlines, Norwegian, Air Algerie, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Lufthansa, announced widespread flight cancellations, leaving Nigerian travellers stranded across parts of the Middle East.
In the National Assembly, the Senate said work would resume next week on the review of the 1999 Constitution. Lawmakers aim to complete amendments that would enable the establishment of state police before the end of 2026. Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu said the process would proceed immediately after plenary reconvenes.
The upper chamber also rejected renewed demands from opposition figures seeking further changes to the 2026 Electoral Act. Senators maintained that any amendment must strictly follow established legislative procedures within the National Assembly.
In Lagos State, authorities reopened the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at the Otto-Ijanikin axis after a communal clash between youths from Ijanikin and Otto communities. The confrontation resulted in one fatality, while several suspects were arrested. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the road was cleared and normal movement restored around 9:00 a.m.
In Plateau State, residents of Bassa Local Government Area buried seven victims killed in a recent gunmen attack in Miango. The burial took place at a primary school, less than a week after nine others were laid to rest in Dorowa Babuje, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, following another assault.
In Kaduna State, suspected terrorists attacked Inkirmi Iri community in Idon Ward of Kajuru Local Government Area late Friday night. One person was killed, four were injured and 11 residents were abducted during the incident, which reportedly occurred at about 11:37 p.m.
On the political front, the Peoples Democratic Party has launched a nationwide digital membership registration exercise. The development was confirmed in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong.
Meanwhile, in the United States, President Donald Trump claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed in air strikes. The statement was posted on his Truth Social platform, but there has been no official confirmation from authorities in Tehran.
