The Lagos State Government has introduced advanced digital technologies to strengthen emergency response and reduce traffic congestion across the state. The initiative is aimed at cutting road crashes and improving coordination among traffic and rescue agencies.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this during an operational review held over the weekend.
Bakare-Oki said the adoption of digital tools has significantly improved how the agency manages road incidents. He noted that officers now respond faster to accidents and traffic emergencies, helping to minimize casualties and prevent prolonged gridlocks.
He explained that the agency has deployed surveillance drones, Traffic Management System cameras, GPS-enabled patrol vehicles, intelligent communication devices, body-worn cameras, and automated incident detection platforms. A toll-free hotline and a central command-and-control centre have also been integrated into the system.
According to him, these technologies enable real-time detection of traffic incidents. Once an incident is identified through digital feeds, information is transmitted immediately to the nearest patrol or rescue unit for swift action.
Bakare-Oki stated that before the introduction of the new systems, delayed reporting and coordination challenges often slowed response efforts. He said the digital infrastructure now supports seamless communication between field officers and the command centre, reducing logistical setbacks.
He added that rescue teams, monitoring units, commanders and zonal heads are equipped with mobile data terminals and integrated communication tools. This allows for quicker traffic diversion, faster clearance of accident scenes and improved collaboration with medical and security agencies.
The agency is also applying predictive data analytics to assess traffic patterns and identify accident-prone corridors. The data-driven approach enables proactive deployment of personnel to high-risk locations, particularly during peak hours.
Bakare-Oki described the investment as part of the broader smart city development strategy of the Lagos State Government. He said the system has enhanced transparency in enforcement, improved documentation of traffic incidents and strengthened institutional decision-making.
He reaffirmed that road safety and efficient traffic management remain core priorities. He added that continued investment in technology and inter-agency cooperation would further improve safety outcomes on Lagos roads.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority urged motorists and residents to comply with traffic regulations and support ongoing modernization efforts aimed at safeguarding lives and ensuring smoother movement across the state.
