Award-winning actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has called on Nigerian creatives to embrace discipline, originality and strategic collaboration as key drivers of success in Nollywood. Speaking at an industry gathering organised by the National Film and Video Censors Board, she emphasised that consistent effort and innovation remain critical in a competitive entertainment landscape.
Akindele shared insights from her professional journey, stressing that her achievements were built on years of dedication rather than sudden success. She told colleagues that staying focused and completing tasks diligently, regardless of circumstances, played a central role in her growth as a filmmaker and producer.
Reflecting on the marketing strategy behind her box office hit, “Battle on Buka Street,” she revealed that limited resources forced her to adopt a digital-first promotional approach. Instead of relying on large-scale advertising campaigns, she created simple video content from home, leveraging social media engagement to build momentum. The unconventional strategy later translated into strong cinema performance.
She noted that the evolving film industry now rewards measurable value and results, urging practitioners to move beyond hierarchy-based thinking. According to her, financial viability and audience acceptance increasingly determine influence in the sector.
Akindele also encouraged collaboration within Nollywood, advising creatives to identify their strengths and partner with others whose expertise complements their weaknesses. She described the industry as a shared economic space that must be protected and strengthened through collective effort.
On a personal note, the actress spoke about finding emotional stability in her work, explaining that creativity and performance have served as a source of resilience during difficult periods in her life.
She concluded by advising emerging talents to remain consistent and authentic. Emphasising the importance of originality, she urged young creatives to focus on producing meaningful content rather than chasing instant online popularity, noting that sustained effort yields long-term rewards.
