The state executive council meeting is presided over by Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the deputy governor of Ondo State.The State Executive Council met for the first time on Thursday, with Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa presiding, three months after the political unrest that shook Ondo State and prevented the meeting from happening.
According to information obtained by The Guardian, the event may have brought an end to the months-long political conflict between Aiyedatiwa and Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, his superior.
But last Friday, President Bola Tinubu intervened by calling the warring groups to a conference in Abuja, where it was decided that Aiyedatiwa should continue serving as the deputy governor. This helped to ease some of the building tensions.
The prolonged dispute between Akeredolu and the deputy governor had been concerning because it posed a risk to the efficient operation of the state government.
“The exco, chaired by Aiyedatiwa, who will preside over the council, marks a crucial step towards restoring harmony not only within the cabinet but in the entire state,” a top cabinet member who wished to remain anonymous said prior to the meeting’s start.
“Tinubu’s intervention truly worked wonders, and I think we can all agree that the state’s development should take precedence over needless internal strife.”
As of the time of publication, the meeting’s agenda’s specifics are still unknown.
Aiyedatiwa had been fighting the impeachment process, forcing him to flee the state in an effort to elude the scheme.
