The Ekiti State Government has begun expanding sales outlets under its ‘Ounje Ekiti’ initiative to improve access to subsidised food for residents. Officials say the move is aimed at strengthening food security, reducing post-harvest losses, and easing the impact of rising food prices on households across the state.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, disclosed the plan while responding to appeals from beneficiaries who requested additional distribution centres. He said the government is increasing outlet coverage to ensure more communities benefit from the programme.
Boluwade explained that food items sold through the scheme are sourced directly from farmers within the state, including young people participating in government-backed agricultural programmes. He noted that the initiative also guarantees a ready market for local produce while supporting rural livelihoods.
Residents currently purchase staple foods such as rice, maize, beans and garri at reduced prices through designated centres. Major distribution points include Shasha BAO, Agric Olope Market, and outlets managed by the Fountain Agricultural Marketing Agency at the Old Governor’s Office area in Ado Ekiti.
Beneficiaries commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for the intervention, describing the programme as timely amid persistent increases in food costs. Many said the subsidised prices have reduced financial strain and helped families maintain access to essential food supplies.
However, participants urged the government to establish more outlets across the state and widen the range of food items available under the scheme to accommodate growing demand.
Boluwade added that the programme prioritises improved food storage, aggregation and distribution systems while maintaining affordability for residents.
The Executive Secretary of the Fountain Agricultural Marketing Agency, Mr Adedayo Alofe, said steady patronage indicates that the goal of making food more accessible is being achieved. He encouraged more residents to take advantage of the initiative.
The agency’s Director of Marketing Operations, Olubusola Adegboye, stated that new measures are being introduced to prevent hoarding and ensure equitable distribution of food supplies.
Officials said the Ounje Ekiti programme forms part of broader efforts by the Ekiti State Government to strengthen food security, support agricultural producers and cushion residents against inflationary pressures in the food market.
The retail scheme operates through structured outlets where locally sourced farm produce is sold directly to consumers at controlled prices, creating a streamlined link between farmers and households.
