The driver accused of causing the fatal crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has appeared again before a court in Ogun State.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared at the Sagamu Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday in connection with the December 29 accident that killed Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami. The case was adjourned to March 13 to allow prosecutors more time to prepare their evidence.
Kayode is facing multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license. He has not yet entered a plea and could face life imprisonment if convicted.
The tragic crash occurred near Lagos when the vehicle carrying Ayodele, Ghami, and Joshua collided with a stationary lorry. Both Ayodele and Ghami died from their injuries, while Joshua survived and was rushed to hospital, where he received treatment before being discharged on New Year’s Eve.
The incident shocked the boxing community and Joshua’s supporters worldwide. The 36-year-old boxer later paid an emotional tribute to his late friends, describing them as “very important players” in his life and career.
Joshua vowed to support their families and ensure their legacy lives on, saying he remains committed to helping fulfill their dreams. As a personal tribute, he also had their names tattooed on his right arm.
The case continues to draw public attention as the court prepares to review further evidence in the coming weeks.
