A close associate of detained Anambra native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwa Aki, has raised alarm over his deteriorating health, alleging that the renowned spiritualist is gradually going blind while in detention.

Speaking anonymously, the associate said she recently spoke with Akwa Okuko from an undisclosed detention facility, where he complained of worsening eyesight and pleaded for urgent medical attention as well as a fair hearing.

“I’m Losing My Sight,” Detainee Reportedly Says

According to her, Akwa Okuko recounted that his ordeal began on February 8, 2025, following an invitation by a senior Anambra government official regarding his popular traditional practice known as Okeite — a “Pot of Fortune” ritual he claims promotes health and prosperity and “forbids human blood.”

He further alleged that his residence in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, was raided without a warrant, during which spiritual items were confiscated, and that his businesses have since suffered due to his prolonged detention.

“I have been in custody for months and my health is deteriorating. I am losing my sight and I need urgent medical attention. I am innocent of the allegations,” he reportedly said.

Rights Groups Demand Fairness and Medical Care

Human rights organisations and civil society groups have since appealed to Governor Charles Soludo to ensure that the detainee is granted due process and access to adequate healthcare.

A Lagos-based lawyer, Anthony Nwigwe, described the prolonged detention as “deeply concerning,” noting that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, belief, and association.

“The government must treat traditional religious practitioners fairly and within the confines of the law,” Nwigwe stated, urging authorities to balance security investigations with human rights obligations.

As of press time, the Anambra State Government and relevant security agencies have not issued an official statement regarding Akwa Okuko’s health condition or the status of his detention.
