A media aide to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Ovie Success, has defended Nollywood actress-turned-evangelist Tonto Dikeh following public backlash over a video showing her conducting a deliverance session in a school in Abuja. He said there was nothing wrong with the act if it was spiritually led and not staged.
The incident has generated widespread debate online, with critics describing the session as inappropriate and calling for possible legal action.
The controversy began after a video surfaced showing Tonto Dikeh praying over a female student who was lying on the floor during a deliverance exercise at a school in Abuja. In the footage, the actress was seen leading prayers and attempting to cast out demons from the student.
The video triggered mixed reactions across social media platforms. While some users defended the spiritual intervention, others criticised the setting and manner of the exercise, describing it as harmful and calling for her arrest.
Reacting to the public criticism, Ossai Ovie Success urged Nigerians to refrain from attacking the actress. He stated that spiritual deliverance is not inappropriate if it occurs under genuine divine influence.
According to him, such religious acts can happen at any time if inspired by the Holy Spirit, as the individual involved may not control the timing or setting. However, he warned that any form of deception or staging would be unacceptable and subject to divine judgment.
Ossai added that his disappointment would only arise if the act was performed under false pretences rather than sincere spiritual conviction.
The development continues to draw attention as discussions persist over religious practices in public institutions and child welfare considerations.
Delta State officials have not announced any formal position beyond the aide’s remarks.
