Seven people are said to have died in a fight between rival cults in North Bank, which is a suburb of Makurdi in Benue State.
The market in the area had to close because of the fight that started on Saturday, February 24, 2024.
Someone who saw the fight and talked to reporters on Monday said it was between the Black Axe and Red Axe cult groups.
Cibilus Odinaka, the head of North Bank Market, explained how the crisis began by saying that one of the rivals came to the market to get something, but was accosted by other people.
“He told his friends back home, and they came back to fight.” That’s how the whole thing began. “Six people have been killed since that Saturday until now, Monday,” Odinaka said.
Punch says that the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering and the Nigerian Army 72 Barracks are in North Bank, which is close to the scene of the crime. However, this did not stop the cults.
“From our point of view, the barracks issue is all that matters.” As it turns out, North Bank does not have any military buildings. We don’t have anyone in the C Division either. Most of the time, they don’t respond at all, Odinaka said.
Nura Umah, the leader of a security group in the area, told reporters on Monday that six cult members died in the fight.
“During the fight, six cult members were killed. Two were from Red Axe and four were from Black Axe.” The cultists took the head of one of the corpses with them when they left. One okada man ran into the fight and died, which was sad, Umah said.
He also said that security staff had been sent to the area.
A spokesperson for the State Police Command, Catherine Anene, confirmed the event and said that officers have been sent to the area where the trouble is happening.
“There were reports of cult activities in North Bank, so the command sent police to take charge.” Investigation is still going on. “I don’t know how many people were hurt,” she said.
