Nigeria’s worsening security crisis has claimed more lives after armed attackers killed at least 38 people and abducted several residents during a violent raid in Zamfara State.
According to police authorities, the attack happened last Thursday in Tungan Duste community, located in Anka Local Government Area of northwestern Zamfara. Despite receiving intelligence ahead of the assault, security operatives were unable to respond quickly due to poor road access to the affected area.
Zamfara State Police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that by the time officers arrived, the attackers had already carried out the deadly operation.
“By the time we reached the community, the assailants had killed 38 people and abducted many residents,” he said.
Police have launched investigations and are currently compiling a list of victims, particularly women and children who were taken by the attackers.
This latest incident adds to the growing wave of violence across northern Nigeria. In nearby Kebbi State, another coordinated attack last week left at least 33 people dead, highlighting the persistent threat posed by armed groups in the region.
The African Union strongly condemned the Zamfara killings and demanded the immediate release of abducted victims. In its official statement, the continental body described the attack as a serious violation of human rights and a threat to peace and stability.
Nigeria continues to face multiple security challenges, including banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping. The United States has also deployed military advisers to assist Nigerian forces in tackling insecurity and restoring stability.
