Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has disclosed that former Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso strongly influenced his decision to sign defender Piero Hincapié. The Spanish tactician said Alonso’s assessment of the player played a key role before the deal was completed.
Hincapie joined Arsenal on loan from Bayer Leverkusen during last summer’s transfer window. The North London club beat competition from Tottenham Hotspur to secure the Ecuadorian defender’s services.
The Premier League leaders retain an option to make the move permanent for a reported £45 million at the end of the season. The decision is expected to be finalized during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Speaking in a pre-match interview with TNT Sports ahead of Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League fixture, Arteta revealed he sought Alonso’s opinion before approving the signing.
According to the Arsenal boss, Alonso described Hincapie as “a warrior,” highlighting his resilience and competitive mindset. Arteta added that the defender possesses strong leadership presence, notable charisma, and a distinct personality within the squad.
