Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stated that opposition parties in Nigeria will remain in disarray until the conclusion of the 2027 general elections. He made the remarks during a reception held in honour of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in Uyo.
Akpabio said recent political activities by opposition groups suggest internal instability, noting that campaigns and party mobilisation were commencing ahead of the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission. INEC has scheduled the official start of political activities for August 26, 2026.
He added that resistance from opposition lawmakers to new legislation often reinforces his belief that the National Assembly is taking the right decisions.
The Senate President said the ruling party is already engaging stakeholders and strengthening structures nationwide, while rival groups are still working to stabilise their platforms. He noted that some are yet to complete party registration processes despite preparing for future elections.
Akpabio also pointed to leadership disputes within major opposition platforms. He cited internal divisions in the Labour Party, saying the party’s influence has weakened due to unresolved conflicts and factional leadership structures across regions.
He further referenced challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party, stating that multiple leadership offices and administrative disputes have created uncertainty over party operations and documentation.
The 2027 general elections are expected to shape Nigeria’s next political cycle, with parties intensifying consultations and strategic alignments ahead of INEC’s official timetable.
