Siminalayi Fubara has inaugurated five commissioners and urged them to deliver effective service to Rivers State, stating that their confirmation followed a demanding legislative screening process. The governor said the exercise had already tested their readiness for executive responsibilities.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The appointments followed the nominees’ confirmation by the Rivers State House of Assembly earlier in the week.
Speaking during the ceremony, Fubara said the lawmakers had clearly defined the responsibilities attached to their offices during the screening. He added that the process itself served as sufficient preparation for their roles in the State Executive Council.
The governor said only strong performance would be acceptable, noting that the state expects measurable contributions from each appointee.
Those sworn in are Tonye Bellgam, Temple Nwofor, Peters Nwagor, Lekue Kenneth and Amairigha Edward Hart.
The Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office were administered by David D. Ihua-Maduenyi, Chief Registrar of the High Court of Rivers State.
Earlier, the Assembly declined to confirm four out of nine commissioner nominees submitted by the governor. Lawmakers cited unsatisfactory performance during screening and inconsistencies in submitted documents, while one nominee was withdrawn following petitions from constituents.
The Assembly is led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule.
Governor Fubara is expected to forward a new list of nominees to the legislature in the coming days. Rivers State has 23 local government areas requiring cabinet-level representation.
None of the eight commissioners previously removed from office two weeks ago has been re-nominated for screening.
