Former professional footballer and media personality Joey Barton has been arrested in connection with an alleged serious assault in Merseyside. Police confirmed that two men are in custody following the incident, which left a victim hospitalised with facial and rib injuries.
Emergency responders were called to the Fairway area of Huyton at about 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. The incident reportedly occurred near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club, where officers discovered an injured man who was later taken to hospital for treatment.
Law enforcement authorities said a 43-year-old man and a 50-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding, a charge related to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Both suspects remain in custody and are being questioned by detectives as investigations continue.
Police did not initially disclose identities, but local sources identified the 43-year-old suspect as Barton, who was born in Huyton.
Merseyside Police confirmed the arrests and said enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the assault.
Barton enjoyed a lengthy top-flight career, making 269 appearances in the Premier League. He featured prominently for Manchester City, where he made 130 league appearances.
After retiring from professional football, Barton moved into coaching and management, including a stint with Bristol Rovers. He later transitioned into media and currently hosts the Common Sense with Joey Barton podcast, where he discusses football and social issues.
