The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, says the All Progressives Congress has set a target of securing at least 10 million votes from Nigeria’s South-West region for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. He said the plan will be driven by intensified voter mobilisation and participation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
Bamidele made the disclosure on Monday in Ado Ekiti during the inauguration of a 57-member governorship campaign council constituted for the re-election bid of Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji.
He stated that the June 20 governorship election in Ekiti State would serve as a public assessment of the incumbent administration’s performance. The Senate Leader expressed confidence that the ruling All Progressives Congress would secure victory, citing achievements recorded by the current government.
Bamidele, who also chairs the Ekiti APC 2026 Governorship Election Campaign Council, said the party had developed a regional mobilisation framework aimed at strengthening electoral participation ahead of 2027. The strategy, he noted, focuses on expanding voter registration and ensuring eligible citizens obtain their Permanent Voter Cards.
He urged party members to intensify grassroots engagement and encourage wider participation in the registration process. He added that residents should be mobilised across communities to ensure stronger turnout in future elections.
The Senate Leader noted that Ekiti State’s population stands at approximately 3.8 million people, while registered voters were 987,647 as of 2023. He stressed the need to increase the voter register by at least 50 per cent before the registration window closes in August 2026.
Bamidele also pledged to lead the governorship campaign with a unified strategy to secure victory for the party, urging members to prioritise internal cohesion.
In his response, Governor Oyebanji expressed appreciation for the Senate Leader’s support and reaffirmed his administration’s focus on governance and development. He said his re-election campaign would centre on policy direction and programme delivery rather than political attacks.
The governor also called on political actors to adhere to the Electoral Act and constitutional provisions to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
