Following the King’s approval on Monday, the Touquet-Paris-Plage airport has been given permission to change its name to honor the late British monarch Queen Elizabeth II.
According to the officials in the town hall, the airport will be known as Elizabeth II Le Touquet-Paris-Plage International Airport in her honor.
The “most British of French resorts” would be recognized in the “Great Queen” tribute, according to BBC.
The name came after the original proposal was presented to the British Crown six days after the death of the Queen on September 8 of last year, according to the statement, which added that the date for the inauguration has not yet been decided.
Le Touquet explained that it was also a tribute to the late Queen’s uncle, Edward VIII, who frequently brought his niece along when he visited the resort to go horseback riding and sand yachting.
Le Touquet’s town hall continued, “That King Charles III accepted the request of the latter further reinforces his strategy to affirm Le Touquet as ‘the most British of French resorts.
To welcome Britons to the coastal town approximately an hour’s drive from Calais, the airport was created in the 1930s. There is also a vacation residence there owned by President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte.
The community anticipates that the renaming of its airport would improve ties with the UK and encourage cross-Channel travel by tourists.
When England’s rugby team competes in the Rugby World Cup being held in France next month, Le Touquet will serve as its home field.
According to the BBC, the Cabinet Office and Buckingham Palace have been asked for comments on the change.
