Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain hopeful and steadfast despite the recent spate of defections from the party, assuring them that the current challenges are temporary and that better days lie ahead.
Makinde made the remarks on Monday during the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Subcommittee in Abuja. He emphasized that while the party is going through a difficult period, the experience will ultimately strengthen the PDP and prepare it for future electoral success.
As Chairman of the Transportation Subcommittee, the governor encouraged members to remain united, committed, and focused on rebuilding the party for national relevance.
Rising Defections Ahead of 2027 Elections
In recent months, several high-profile PDP members have defected to rival political blocs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among them are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-presidential aspirant Dele Momodu, who have joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition.
Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has welcomed several PDP leaders, including Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and the party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa.
With the PDP National Elective Convention set to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15–16, reports suggest that Enugu Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri may also defect to the APC before the event.
“This Is Not the Time to Despair” — Makinde
Addressing concerns about the defections, Governor Makinde appealed to PDP members nationwide to remain strong and confident in the party’s future.
“It may appear that things are getting worse, but when you want something that will endure, it usually gets worse before it gets better,” he said.
“From when the 34 wise men came together to put democracy on the map in 1999, PDP has always been a constant factor — either as the ruling party or the main opposition. We’re not going anywhere.”
Makinde urged members to “hold their own corner for PDP,” stressing that this was the time for “authentic heroes” to emerge within the party.
“This is not the time to despair or engage in self-doubt. It’s the time to come out boldly and be counted,” he said.
Confidence in Upcoming Convention
Makinde also assured party faithful that the forthcoming National Convention would produce capable and visionary leaders committed to rescuing Nigeria.
“Trust the leadership that we will enthrone — leadership that will help put this country back on track,” he said. “No matter how little your assignment is, do it diligently, and we will all reap the benefits.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Makinde noted that he served as Secretary of the National Convention Organising Committee in 2021, and has now accepted the role of Chairman of the Transportation Subcommittee to ensure smooth logistics for delegates traveling to Ibadan.
“Our task begins before the delegates even leave their homes,” he explained. “The success of the convention will depend on how efficiently we handle this assignment.”
The governor concluded with a message of resilience, urging members to see the current moment as “a test of faith and loyalty” — one that will ultimately lead to the PDP’s revival and renewed strength across Nigeria.
