Nigerian Corrections Officer Allegedly Brutalized by Police in Yobe State's Potiskum Area Command

Abubakar Umar Mainta, a corrections officer with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), reportedly endured brutality at the hands of officers stationed at the Police Area Command's office in Potiskum, Yobe State.

Following the incident, Mainta was admitted to a hospital in Potiskum, according to his family. Dr. Suleiman Sa’id, a sibling of the victim, disclosed to Daily Trust that Mainta was assaulted while attempting to secure bail for an accused individual at the station.

The altercation stemmed from the refusal of police corporal Abdullahi Aji Bulama to accept a court summons related to a criminal complaint against him, filed by the victim's family in response to an assault case.

Despite efforts to serve Corporal Bulama with the summons, Area Commander Mohammed Musa Zayyanu allegedly intervened and redirected the bailiff to serve the Commissioner of Police in Damaturu.

When questioned, Yobe State Police Command's spokesperson, DSP Dungus Abdulkareem, claimed ignorance of the court summons, asserting that such documents should be directed to the Commissioner's office or the legal department of the command.

Abdulkareem emphasized that legal matters of this nature are typically handled by senior officials, not the area command.
