The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, cautioned chairmen of the six area councils in the territory on Tuesday, advising them against frequent overseas trips amid growing concerns about the worsening state of insecurity and education crises.
During an emergency meeting with security agencies and council chairmen in Abuja, the minister reassured FCT residents not to panic, assuring them that decisive actions were being taken to address the security challenges.
Wike stated, "All of us are aware of the security situation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), particularly Bwari Area Council and some other areas that we have witnessed security challenges."
He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of the FCT, which accommodates people from all over Nigeria. Wike asserted that every necessary step was being taken to address the challenges and resolve the problems discussed during the meeting.
Addressing area council chairmen, Wike warned against neglecting their responsibilities and undertaking frequent travels. He expressed concern about reports of chairmen leaving their duties to travel, emphasizing the need for them to fulfill their responsibilities in their respective area councils.
Wike also highlighted the challenges facing public primary school education in the FCT, pointing out the recent strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and attributing the issues to the area councils. He clarified that primary schools fall under the jurisdiction of the Area Councils and discussed the need to collaborate to resolve the problems.
