According to a statement made by ASC Adeleke Kehinde, the NSCDC command's spokeswoman for Osun, the woman was retrieved out of the river on Tuesday by officers following a distress call indicating that someone had dove into the river.
"After receiving a distress call from a member of the public, the command's search and rescue team dispatched police to the area in under 10 minutes to save the victim.
According to the statement, "the victim, a middle-aged woman, was resuscitated and later taken to the hospital for medical attention."
After regaining consciousness, the woman reportedly stated that she had traveled from Iragbiji to Osogbo with the intention of killing herself by plunging into the Gbodofon (Osun) River.
The woman said, according to the PRO, that she felt that there was fire within of her, and the only way to put out the fire was to leap into the Osun River. This is why she chose to take her own life.
According to Adeleke, Sunday, Agboola, the state NSCDC Commandant, praised the Search and Rescue Team for their responsiveness and application of their disaster management training.
"Agboola reassured locals that even in times of emergency, the leadership is dedicated to preserving lives and property.
"His men would keep a close eye on all the rivers in the state to prevent people from jumping into them to commit suicide," the statement reads. He urged the people to take care of their mental health.
