This decision stems from the persistent non-compliance of International Oil Companies (IOCs) and stevedoring contractors with the country's existing laws.
The union, as conveyed by John Ikemefuna, the Head of Media for MWUN in a statement on Thursday night, issued the threat following the lapse of the three-day period granted to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
Despite numerous letters, ultimatums, marine notices, and ministerial orders, the union claims that NPA management consistently disregarded these communications.
MWUN insists on full adherence by IOCs to stevedoring regulations, as outlined in a communique endorsed by relevant stakeholders in the sector.
The union accuses the NPA, acting as a master stevedore and industry regulator, of neglecting its responsibility by allowing IOCs to operate without proper control, prompting the decision to shut down seaports nationwide on January 9, 2024, after the expiration of the three-day notice to NPA from January 4, 2024.
