SEMA chief reports that there are 14 camps for internally displaced people in Benue.
According to Sir James Iorpuu, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the state is home to 14 camps for internally displaced people (IDPs).

When three new camps are opened in January 2024, Iorpuu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Friday that the total would rise to 17.

The IDP camps, according to him, are situated in the local governments of Makurdi, Guma, Gwer West, Logo, and Agatu.

There were six IDP camps in Benue prior to us taking office, but as of right now, there are fourteen.

"These are not brand-new camps; they were there before, but the previous administration did not acknowledge them. They have been identified and turned on by us.

There have previously been rumors that the IDPs were not receiving food or other supplies from the government.

However, things have changed; the IDPs in Benue are content now if you visit. Because the government is providing for them well, some of them are unwilling to return to their homes, he said.

He claimed that SEMA hired employees and assigned them to different camps to appropriately handle the IDPs in order to successfully provide for them.

He claims that SEMA divided the IDPs into groups within each camp, with some having as many as eight groups.

Iorpuu informed NAN that the food was often distributed to the groups by way of the group leaders, who see to it that the residents of the camps receive it.

Even our efforts with water and sanitation have improved. We are working with the Victims Support Fund, the United High Commission for Refugees, and Doctors Without Borders.

These are the principal development partners who have provided us with assistance. They constructed sanitary facilities, made shelters for the campers, and other things.

"We're gathering precise, substantiated information about the people living in the camps. The theoretical estimates that the previous government left us with are not something we want to use going forward.

"As I mentioned earlier, the inherited figure we have been using of 2,146,000 displaced folks is not verified, and we are working toward obtaining something accurate.

We invited the International Organization on Migration (IOM), who is in charge of IDP biometric capturing at the moment, to obtain the precise data.

"We'll determine the precise number of displaced individuals once the exercise is completed," he continued.
