Regarding the purported N37 billion theft, Umar-Farouq disputes any connections to the detained contractor.
Sadiya Umar-Farouq, a former minister of social development, disaster management, and humanitarian affairs, has denied knowing James Okwete, a contractor detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on suspicion of laundering N37 billion.

Okwete was accused of sending N6,746,034,000.00 to Bureau De Change Operators, taking N540,000,000.00 out of circulation, spending N288,348,600.00 on fancy cars, and spending N2,195,115,000.00 on opulent homes in Abuja and Enugu State.

Okwete was accused of using 53 firms to launder N27,423,824,339.86 in contracts from the Federal Government through the use of 47 other companies.

Additionally, he has connections to 143 bank accounts in 12 commercial banks, of which 134 are corporate accounts connected to various businesses.

It has been reported that Okwete, after his incarceration by the EFCC, has provided insightful remarks about Umar-Farouk and the former director-general of the Ministry of Social Development, Disaster Management, and Humanitarian Affairs.

In response to rumors that connected her to the suspect, Umar-Farouq stated she was unaware of the identity of the individual.

She asserted that she was a minister with full responsibility for her acts and would stand by them if necessary.

"A number of reports have connected me to an alleged investigation into the activities of a James Okwete, who is entirely unknown to me, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)."

She said that Okwete was not her employee or representative in any manner and that any connections or ties with her are unfounded.

"Even though I resent the idea of participating in a media trial of any kind, I have gotten in touch with my legal team to discuss my possibilities for seeking compensation for the intentional attack on my person.

"I am still honored to have served my nation as a Federal Republic of Nigeria Minister with utmost responsibility, and if called upon, I would stand up for the policies, activities, and initiatives I implemented while I was in office.
