Nigeria is worried about the rise of military coups in West Africa.
The government of Nigeria has stated that the increasing number of military takeovers in West Africa is quickly endangering the democratic traditions of the area.


In his introductory remarks at the 51st Ordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council, Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Council, made this statement.


The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has the Security Council as one of its bodies.


The ambassador cited the most recent failed coup attempts in Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone as evidence of the Council members' shared duty to provide answers to the region's pressing problems in order to foster long-term stability and peace.


He praised the governments of Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone for their unwavering efforts to foil recent attempts to undermine the stability of their respective constitutions.

Ambassador Tuggar praised the successful organization of the country's recent presidential and legislative elections and expressed gratitude to the government and people of Liberia for their steadfast adherence to democratic values.


The Minister also praised the unceasing efforts of the ECOWAS Commission's leadership, the heads of its institutions, and the committed employees who still play crucial roles in advancing community interests and promoting peace and security across the region.
