The caucus expressed their shock at the horrific and senseless deaths of people on Christmas Eve in 23 communities located in the Plateau state's Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local government areas.
Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the Caucus Chairman, stated in a statement that these savage crimes are not and have never been a reflection of what this country's north is known for.
Despite its religious, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity, the Northern area is renowned for being tolerant and supportive of individual differences, the former head of the house stressed. He maintained that the Plateau tragedy is illogical, unjustifiable, and a reflection on humanity.
Doguwa added, "First and foremost, we would like to express our sympathies to the government and the good people of Plateau state. At the same time, we condemn the killings as the most senseless, vicious, and barbaric acts that have no place in our society."
Due to media reports indicating that over 150 people died in the coordinated attacks, as well as the subsequent outcry, we, along with the rest of Nigerians, are calling for a comprehensive and well-intentioned investigation into the cause(s) of these senseless killings that have once again cast our region in a negative light in national discourse.
"We think that the only way to bring about a lasting peace in the Plateau region—which has become known for attacks and retaliation attacks, particularly among farming communities and pastoralists—is to conduct a thorough fact-finding mission and hold those who played direct or indirect roles in this massacre and other pockets of killings that have been occurring in the state in recent weeks, as reported in the media.
"We demand that justice be done in this case by apprehending all of the offenders and establishing a long-term solution to this ongoing criminality in Plateau and other Northern Nigerian regions. We call on governments at the state and federal levels as well as all security agencies to ensure this happens."
According to Doguwa, the caucus is pleading with governments, kind-hearted organizations, and private citizens to assist everyone hurt and displaced by this attack.
He went on to say that the caucus will continue to vigorously fulfill its legislative duties as parliamentarians and support organizations and individuals in their tasks to guarantee long-term peace in the Northern region.
The legislator for Kano state's Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal constituency reaffirmed that the country should preserve people's rights to life, property, and the sanctity of human life in all of their local communities.
