Due to his failing health, Tukur Mamu's family, the editor of Desert Herald and former key negotiator between the federal government and bandits, has called on the government to release him from detained custody.
Mamu's family begged for administrative bail so that he could take care of his failing health. They said that Mamu's health issue, which required immediate attention, was the reason he had to travel to Cairo before being detained and returned to Nigeria.
A statement signed by Mamu's children—Faisal Tukur Mamu, Dr. Zainab Tukur Mamu, Usama Tukur Mamu, Nazir Tukur Mamu, Kashim Tukur Mamu, and two-year-old Marwan Tukur Mamu—and provided to journalists in Kaduna on Monday conveyed the family's concerns for his health.
The family said in the statement titled "A Passionate Appeal For Mercy" that their father's failing health made the request urgent.
"We, the children, call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu, and Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio, in the name of God Almighty and humanity, to intervene in our father's ongoing detention and assist in securing his release," the family of Tukur Mamu says.
"We are fervently appealing for your good offices and for you as a loving and responsible father to please grant our father administrative bail so that he will urgently do the much needed surgery," the statement emphasized. "We are not seeking the discontinuation of our father's trial."
"Tukur Mamu has a well-documented history of respiratory ailments which forced him to travel to Egypt for medical treatment several times before his arrest and incarceration," the family added in their explanation.
Because of this medical problem, his Indian doctor had advised him to utilize a medical device while he slept at night to prevent an unexpected heart attack or failure.
Additionally, the device's implantation was just meant to be a stopgap; a major surgery to address his respiratory imbalance was advised.
His doctor says that a major portion of his respiratory system is clogged, necessitating an immediate surgical procedure.
About three years ago, this advice and conclusion were made. Ultimately, a plan was made for him to fly to Cairo and undergo the operation there; however, it was during this process—and while traveling to the procedure—that he was detained on September 6, 2022.
