Elections in 2023: Court remands an APC member over suspected vote-buying
On Wednesday, an Ikeja High Court remanded Wahab Hameed, who is accused of plotting and purchasing votes during the 2023 presidential and national assembly elections, to the care of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

After the defendant pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy and bribery that the EFCC had brought against him, Justice Ismail Ijelu remanded the defendant.

In order to assess the evidence and ruling, the judge postponed the trial until December 7.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the defendant informed the judge that he could only speak and understand "pidgin" English when the accusations were read to him.

He begged to have the accusations read to him in Yoruba.

Samuel Daji, the prosecutor for the EFCC, earlier informed the court that the defendant had planned, on February 25, to pay voters in the 2023 presidential and national assembly elections with one Segun Ijitola, who is currently at large.

According to Daji, the defendant—who is purportedly a member of the All Progressives Congress—performed the crime in Surulere's Unit 28 of Gbaja Girls Junior High School.

According to the prosecution, the defendant and his accomplice bought votes at Unit 28 on the specified date.

He informed the court that the offenses violate the Election Act of 2022's Sections 121 (1) and (5) as well as Section 121 (1) and 1 (3).

Daji went on to say that since the defendant had entered a guilty plea to the allegations, the court ought to give the commission a little extension to work out the specifics of the case before a review.

Mr. Olabiyi Ademola, the defense attorney, asked the court to keep his client in the EFCC's custody and agreed to a brief postponement of the trial till December 7.
