The guild stated that the need for the appeal arose on Friday, December 22, at Lagos Street, Ebute Metta, when a four-story structure collapsed, taking three lives.
According to the guild, BCPG recommended that the other four-story building within the same property be fenced off since it seemed fragile after a three-story building fell at No. 29, Oloto Street, Ebute-Metta on the Lagos Mainland on July 11, 2013. Evicting the occupants and ensuring the building stayed empty were proactive actions taken by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA). This building also collapsed on July 7, 2015. Because to the precautions taken, no one died.
Felix Chikwu, Coordinator, BCPG Lagos Mainland Cell, issued the following warning at the time: "If concrete steps are taken to get rid of these weak buildings, developers' substandard buildings in Ebute Metta will eventually collapse, endangering the lives of occupants." Several subpar structures under construction were shown to BCPG members in Ebute Metta by my predecessor and the previous coordinator, Mrs. Nike Lanre-Ladenegan. This led to multiple BCPG Short Message Service (SMS) broadcasts in support of whistleblowing. He went on, "It should be an exercise to determine the structural soundness of these buildings.
