2023 saw zero jail attacks in Nigeria, according to an NCoS official.
According to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), there were no attacks or jailbreaks in any of the nation's 253 detention facilities in 2023.

This was revealed in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja by the spokesperson, Mr. Abubakar Umar, Assistant Controller of Corrections (ACC).

According to Umar, the government has taken extensive steps to strengthen facility security and successfully fend off any possible threats, whether they come from within or outside the building.

He claimed that terrifying incidents of violent jailbreaks and attacks had occurred in Nigeria in the past and that numerous measures had been taken to stop the trends from spreading throughout the country.

He recalled that the management had declared on January 20 that, in order to prevent jail attacks, a large number of people and technologies for intelligence gathering would be deployed in 2023, making it difficult for those who commit jailbreaks nationwide.

He explained that this has to do with security plans to avert the events of 2022 as well as the construction of infrastructure in the service for the year 2023.

According to NAN, on July 5, 2022, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a breakaway group of Boko Haram, successfully carried off an attack on a well guarded detention center in Abuja, Nigeria.

The group successfully broke into the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre by overcoming the watchful security guards. This led to the notable escape of 879 prisoners, of whom over half were later found.

According to Umar, the fact that there were no jail attacks in Nigeria in 2023 was a result of the country's strong security protocols and the hard work of the security officers, who included a variety of stakeholders.

According to him, it demonstrated the dedication to upholding a secure atmosphere in detention facilities, protecting the welfare of both workers and prisoners.

"This accomplishment should be recognized as a critical turning point in maintaining law and order throughout the nation," he declared.

According to Umar, it is quite amazing that there were no jail attacks in Nigeria in 2023.

"It says volumes about the efficacy of the highest caliber security protocols that have been scrupulously maintained in our detention facilities around the country.

Ensuring the safety and security of these facilities is crucial because it safeguards not only the prisoners but also the committed staff members who put in a great deal of effort to keep the system in order and promote rehabilitation.

This achievement is the result of several different things. It is a testament to the commitment and expertise of the security staff, who perform their jobs with diligence and have strong policies and procedures in place to avert any unfortunate events.

"We should be recognized for our commendable commitment to upholding the highest standards of security," he said.

Speaking further, Umar claimed that the harmony found in all Nigerian detention facilities was also a result of effective inmate rehabilitation and reintegration.

He stated that providing care for prisoners was an enormous responsibility and that the security and tranquility of the country's detention facilities compared favorably to public safety.

"Remember that businesses only succeed when there is no chaos," he remarked.

"This year, we make sure that the prisoners are housed in our detention facilities without any issues, disturbances, or disturbances, and that they are conducting their daily activities, which provides the necessary safety for society.

He stated, "A safe and well-kept custodial system not only preserves the rule of law but also offers an atmosphere that is favorable to the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders."

The NCoS official said that the fact that there were no jail attacks in 2023 was another indication of how crucial it is for law enforcement organizations to work together and share intelligence.

According to Umar, the effective cooperation of numerous parties, such as the Nigerian Police Force, NCoS officials, and other security organizations, has also been essential to preserving the security of detention facilities.

"This favorable result has definitely been influenced by their collaboration and attentiveness," he stated.
