Yiaga laments that NPC and Immigration's faulty data is impeding the cleanup of the voter registration.
The election monitoring group, Yiaga Africa, has attributed the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) unsuccessful attempt to clean up Nigeria's voter register to the lack of reliable data from the National Population Commission (NPC) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) regarding deceased persons and those who have permanently relocated out of the country.

Samson Itodo, the Executive Director of Yiaga, expressed regret over the credibility and accuracy concerns of the register.

He highlighted challenges in obtaining reliable data on deceased individuals from the NPC and obtaining information from the NIS about Nigerians who have permanently relocated.

Itodo called for an interagency framework involving INEC, NPC, National Identity Management Commission, National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria Immigration Service, civil society, and academia to clean up the register effectively.

He also suggested linking the register to census, civic registration, and other databases for verification, depoliticizing the process, and initiating full online voter registration.

Additionally, Itodo recommended discontinuing the printing of PVCs, issuing paper PVCs at the point of registration, using specified identity documents for voting, and conducting an independent audit of the voter register for transparency and public confidence.
