There were rumors that a fire started while the embassy's power plant was being fixed.
The Guardian was informed by embassy staff who fled that the fire started at 11:30 PM and that fire trucks were called in to put out the flames while rescue efforts continued.
An ambulance arrived to take the injured, and embassy staff members were escorted to safety beneath trees and other secure areas within the embassy compound, according to a correspondent for The Guardian.
Joly commented on the tragic event and promised an investigation.
