Tension arose as a result of the incident amid reports of a planned protest by a political organization against the Appeal Court's ruling over the Kano governorship election.
The tranquil environment in the region was disrupted by several gangs of political thugs engaging in combat early on Wednesday morning, as reported by The Guardian.
According to an eyewitness who spoke with The Guardian, a group of police officers sent to the site started firing intermittently and releasing tear gas canisters to get the thugs to move.
After a stray gunshot hit an innocent adolescent who was not involved in the combat between the warring thugs, the police involvement backfired, sparking a large-scale demonstration.
For several hours, demonstrators blocked the heavily traveled Kano-Katsina-Daura route, causing commuters and those who became stopped in the area much suffering.
SP Abdullahai Haruna Kiyawa, a spokesman for the Kano police command, verified the development when he was called. He promised to respond to the development with an official statement.
