Shettima claims that air power has interfered with terrorist networks.
Vice President Kashim Shettima has said the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) air power has disrupted terrorists’ networks and provided support to ground forces in the fight against terrorism.

Shettima stated this in his address at the launch of a book titled, ‘Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism in North East Nigeria: Emerging Perspectives and the Imperative of Airpower,’ in Abuja.

The VP, who was represented by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said acts of terrorism were responsible for the sufferings in the North East.

“The North East region of Nigeria has been grappling with the scourge of terrorism for far too long. The brutal acts committed by extremist groups have inflicted immense suffering upon the innocent people of the region. But amidst this darkness, there is hope. Hope that through knowledge, understanding and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, we can overcome these challenges and restore peace and stability to the region,” he said.

He noted that airpower as a critical component in modern warfare has “proven instrumental in gathering intelligence, disrupting terrorist networks and providing support to ground forces.

He described the book as a reminder that, “we have a shared responsibility to fight against terrorism and protect the lives and liberties of our fellow citizens.

He said the insights contained in the book should “inform policymakers, military strategists and practitioners on the most effective ways to leverage airpower in the ongoing battle against terrorism.”

He added: “By fostering partnerships and fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities of terrorism, we can enhance our collective efforts to address this threat comprehensively

“Let us engage with the ideas presented in this book, amplify its message and translate its insights into concrete actions that will make a tangible difference on the ground.

“Together, let us stand united against terrorism and work towards a future where peace, security and prosperity prevail in the North East region of Nigeria.”

In his remarks, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, said airpower with its unique capabilities and reach, has proven to be a game-changer in countering the asymmetric threats posed by terrorist organisations.

He noted that the ability to swiftly project force, conduct surveillance, gather intelligence and provide close air support has been instrumental in degrading the capabilities of the insurgents and terrorists. He, however, revealed that the fight against terrorism was not one-dimensional.

“It requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of extremism, promotes social cohesion and fosters economic development. Accordingly, the insights and perspectives shared in this book can serve as a guiding light for policy makers, military strategists and practitioners in formulating holistic solutions that go beyond the realm of military operations,” he added.

He reiterated that the fight against terrorism was not confined to the battleground alone, but requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders, including the military, government agencies, civil society and the international community.

He stated that, “by harnessing the full potential of airpower and embracing the emerging perspectives highlighted in this book, we can forge a path towards lasting peace, security and prosperity in Northeast Nigeria.”

Speaking in his personal capacity, Akpabio assured the military of legislative support to ensure acquisition of more air assets to prosecute the war.

“The job of the National Assembly is to support them and we can do so through appropriate appropriation. We can do so through support not just in terms of law making but also in terms of making sure that we budget adequately for all the equipment that they need,” he said
