Minister summoned by representatives over N1 trillion conditional cash transfer plan
The House of Representatives decided Wednesday to summon Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, to discuss the methods used for the 90-day distribution of N25,000 per month to 15 million households.

The resolution followed a motion made in plenary by Morufu Adebayo (Osun: PDP).

The Renewed Hope conditional cash transfer program was announced by President Bola Tinubu as an urgent measure to mitigate the consequences of the loss of gasoline subsidies and other economic shocks, with the goal of uplifting Nigerians who are poor and vulnerable.

The plan, which would cost over N1.1 trillion, is one of 15 issues in the Memorandum of Understanding signed on October 2 by the Federal Government and Organized Labor.

Adebayo, the motion's sponsor, expressed sorrow over the numerous negative comments received about how several Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) handled the initiative.

Remembering the COVID-19 scandal from a few years prior, in which citizen donations were mishandled, the congressman maintained that the distribution procedure had not lessened poverty in the nation.

"Aware that the members of the National Assembly should be fully informed and involved in the implementation process, given their proximity to the people and their role in representing their interests and concerns at the national level," he stated.

In order to ensure accountability and openness, the House subsequently directed its Committees on Constituency Outreach and Poverty Alleviation to extend an invitation to the minister to provide the lower legislative body with all relevant program details.
