Military should fight insurgencies in space, the Deputy Speaker advises
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has emphasized the need for the Federal Government to prioritize the surveillance and security of the country's space. Speaking at the closing ceremony of a two-day post-inauguration retreat for the House Committee on Defence, Kalu urged Nigeria to move beyond traditional mechanisms for fighting insurgencies and extend security measures into space.

He called for the creation of a Space Service Chief or Chief of Space Staff to lead the Space Command Force, emphasizing the importance of proactive space security in the face of modern warfare and cyber operations.

Kalu highlighted that warfare increasingly takes place in space, and neglecting this aspect could compromise the mandate of protecting the country's territorial borders. He stressed the importance of appointing a space service chief to structure preventive operations and prepare for potential threats. Kalu acknowledged the role of the Nigeria Police Force in internal security, advocating for increased support to enable them to handle internal security matters, allowing the military to focus on their areas of competence and training.

Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, commended the leadership provided by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, expressing the committee's commitment to working closely with the defence sector to achieve the legislative agenda and address insecurity in Nigeria.
