Mbah authorizes increased pay for workers in Enugu
On Thursday, Peter Mbah, the governor of Enugu, authorized increased pay for state employees.

In a statement, Mbah reaffirmed this and mentioned that he had earlier on Wednesday offered further palliatives for the Enugu workers.

"I announced further palliatives for our workers, as well as the indigent citizens in our communities, yesterday in my office, in the presence of labor leaders in the state," he wrote on X.

"My administration has approved the increase in our state's social register enrollment from 43,000 to 260,000 for cash transfers to the indigent ones, as well as the payment of between N10,000 and N25,000 to workers."

Mbah stated that the intention is to mitigate the negative effects on workers and low-income individuals caused by the elimination of fuel subsidies.

He stated that his administration thinks that the Enugu state's workers and vulnerable citizens will benefit greatly from the cash transfers and other social actions.

He states that the payments will be made for a period of five months, from December of next month to April of 2024.

According to Mbah, the Enugu state government has established a payment category under which civil officers, employees of local governments, and teachers of primary and secondary schools will each earn a fixed salary ranging from N10,000 to N25,000.

A worker's compensation will be determined by the category they fit into, and his government will also be examining the minimum wage.

He continued by saying that ideally, the committee charged with that duty will deliver a new minimum wage to the Enugu state government by the end of April 2024, for them to put into effect.

The governor went on to declare that his government is committed to having the state's poverty headcount index at zero percent by 2031.

"We have allocated N1.5 billion towards social development initiatives, such as providing water and sanitation to our local communities," stated Mbah.

Additionally, 260 smart schools with teacher housing and 260 model primary healthcare centers will be built.

"Teachers would live close to their places of employment, saving on transportation costs, and enjoy free housing."

Mbah added that his administration's ultimate objective is for all social services provided to Enugu state workers to have a monetary worth that is far more than the N100,000 minimum salary.
