To voice their mounting annoyance, protestors carrying placards invaded the palace of Oba Babatunde Ajayi, the Akarigbo and supreme monarch of Remoland.
The fish vendors called for quick action to improve the state's economy in Sagamu and other areas.
"The rate at which fish prices are rising is excessive." What's taking place? Shawa is now worth N1,000, while one Titus is worth N2,000. Is that not excessive? stated one of the merchants.
Locals have been severely impacted by the price swings; one has bemoaned the sudden increase in fish, which was generally sold for N1,200 a week ago, to N1,800.
They also expressed fear that the situation will get worse due to the fish merchants' planned 10-day strike.
Adelaja Awodeyi, a merchant, explained that the nonviolent protest was a proactive measure to alert locals and clients about the fish market's regular price hikes.
Fish is purchased from Lagos. A carton of fish will cost N10,000 today, but it will cost N15,000 the following day.
Fish prices now rise in a span of two to three days. Thus, the fish vendors thought that the protest would make the public aware of their predicament," he stated.
