The Federal Government has acknowledged the challenges posed by the deteriorating conditions of numerous federal roads across the country, such as the Makurdi-Nsukka 9th Mile Road, East-West Road, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Benin bypass road, Enugu-Port Harcourt road, Shandam-Plateau State, Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road, and Gombe-Bauchi. Minister of Works, David Nweze Umahi, outlined the ministry's plans for immediate action, emphasizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's commitment to addressing inherited challenges.
Umahi disclosed a $300 billion Supplementary Budget for the Ministry of Works, with $100 billion allocated for immediate palliative works and $200 billion for ongoing and new critical road projects.
The Minister called for public engagement to supervise contractors, address concerns about road construction materials, and emphasized the commitment to ensuring high-quality road projects.
There will be increased supervision methods starting December 1, 2023, with a focus on accountability and transparency in project execution.
