FG and UNICEF applaud Nigeria's efforts to protect children.On the occasion of the Universal Day of the Child, both the Nigerian federal government and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) have acknowledged Nigeria's advancements in child protection through the adoption and enforcement of the Child Rights Act (CRA). 


The Minister of Women Affairs, Barrister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, emphasized the government's commitment to prioritizing children's rights, ensuring their access to essential services, education, and protection from violence.


During an interactive session and symposium with students at Government Science Technical School in Abuja, Barrister Kennedy-Ohanenye cited specific cases, underscoring the ministry's actions against negligence and sexual defilement. 


She asserted that no Nigerian girl should endure any form of molestation and emphasized the collective responsibility of the government, children, and stakeholders to secure and protect children's rights.


Chikodi Onyemerela, UNICEF Director of Programs, highlighted the significance of safeguarding children's rights to medical services, education, development, and protection from abuse. 


Stressing the importance of every child's rights, Onyemerela urged Nigeria to recognize children's role in governance and allocate appropriate resources for their well-being.


Andrew Madugu, Director Child at the federal ministry of women affairs, encouraged children to stay focused on their studies and show gratitude and respect to their elders. 


A student, Friday Onyekachukwu, expressed appreciation for the minister's visit and urged the government to continue supporting orphaned children and those lacking access to basic amenities, including education. 


The event included a quiz competition and the distribution of school bags and educational materials.
