The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a warning about the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Debit Card swapping fraud.
The commission noted a surge in complaints from Nigerians reporting unauthorized withdrawals from their bank accounts.
The fraud involves swapping a victim's debit card with a similar one from the same bank, usually under the guise of assisting a confused bank customer at an ATM point.
The fraudster memorizes the PIN and abandons the victim, who later discovers the fraud.
The EFCC advises the public to be cautious, keep cards in sight, regularly check bank statements, set transaction alerts, and block ATM cards in case of irregularities.
