Atiku demands that opposition parties unite in opposition to the APC.
Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, advocated for the union of opposition parties to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in power.

Atiku made the request on Tuesday when hosting the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) national executive committee in Abuja, according to a statement sent by his media adviser, Paul Ibe.

He stated that the task of preserving Nigeria's democracy is not limited to one individual and issued a warning that the country's democracy is "fast becoming a one-party system."

The former vice president made the point that in order to stop Nigeria from devolving into a de facto one-party system and to confront the seeming erosion of democratic values, a strong coalition is required.

"As everyone has witnessed, the APC is progressively transforming Nigeria into a one-party dictatorship. We shall lose our democracy and the future generations would be impacted if we do not unite to oppose the policies that the ruling party is attempting to implement, stated Atiku.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was criticized by Atiku as well, claiming that it administered the "worst-ever general elections" in Nigerian history.

In order for INEC to reestablish trust and guarantee transparency in upcoming elections, Atiku urged opposition lawmakers to prioritize electronic voting.

He stated that nations less developed than Nigeria had effectively adopted electronic voting methods, emphasizing the need for legislation to enable electoral reforms.

"For this reason, as well as others, I implore you all to make a strong case to members of the National Assembly's opposition parties to sponsor legislation that advances the agenda for electoral and constitutional reform that I outlined at my most recent press conference.

"Since nations far less developed than Nigeria already use electronic voting, the National Assembly must make this issue its top priority."

Following his loss to APC President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, Atiku has made this call.
