Barely two weeks have passed since a boat sank in Taraba State's Karim-Lamido Local Government Area, killing over 70 people. This tragic occurrence is taking place.
The families of the victims in the most recent incident between the Anyeci neighborhood of Wukari LGA in Taraba and Chinkai in Benue have received condolences from Dr. Agbu Kefas, the governor of Taraba state.
The governor described the tragedy as particularly concerning because it occurred just a few weeks after a similar incident that took over 70 lives, according to Emmanuel Bello, a spokesman for Kefas.
Kefas prayed to God, so the story goes, asking that the deceased's spirits be granted eternal rest.
The official added that the Taraba government has already begun devising plans to ensure that boat accidents in the state never happen again.
Bello cited Kefas as stating, "The boat incident today is even more unfortunate since it comes on the heels of a similar one in Karim Lamido that threw the state into mourning."
Although it is tragic, I would like to point out that the government is already monitoring the issue and conducting many investigations to identify the hidden causes of boat accidents in the state.
"In order to make sure that the water transportation system is safe for passengers, I would shortly personally tour the impacted areas and engage with local players in the waterways transport sectors.
"Among other life-saving measures, measures are in place to face out old boats and introduce the compulsory use of life jackets," Governor Kefas lamented.
