This was verified in a statement issued by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Nigerian Police Force spokesperson. As a result, Egbetokun gave the order for the Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department to assume responsibility for the situation.
According to Adejobi, the main goal of IGP Egbetokun's command was to ascertain the actual facts surrounding the occurrence.
He states that the IGP is keen to clear up any confusion that may arise because the Police have been deluged with competing reports of the occurrence, necessitating investigations to resolve them.
According to a police spokeswoman, "The Nigeria Police Force understands the importance of transparency and accountability in maintaining public trust."
Therefore, "the IGP assures the public, especially the organized labor leadership, that a comprehensive and impartial inquiry will be conducted to provide clarifications."
Adejobi stated that since Egbetokun has personally stepped in to address the issues surrounding this occurrence, he has also advised organized labor and the general public to maintain their composure.
He went on to say that an investigation has started and that the Nigerian Police Force will see it through to the end.
Adejobi went on to say that the incident that happened in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, will be investigated and that the relevant actions will be taken depending on the results.
