Why Nigerian academics weren't nominated for the Nobel Prize
According to the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU), the absence of Nigerian scholars, particularly those from the intellectual community, among the nominees for the 2023 Nobel Prize can be attributed to inadequate research funding.

Professor Yakubu Ochefu, the Secretary-General of the committee, provided a response in relation to the recent declaration of the laureates for the 2023 Nobel Prize.

The individual delivered a speech during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, marking the celebration of the committee's 60th anniversary.

According to Ochefu, in order for individuals from Nigeria to be considered for Nobel Prize nominations, it is imperative that significant advancements are made in the realm of cutting-edge research.

This pertains to the ongoing efforts of the CVCNU to enhance the financial support for the university system.

Achieving a Nobel Prize is the result of continuous and intense scholarly investigation within a certain academic field, rather than an isolated occurrence.

The observation that the average age of Nobel Prize laureates is approximately 50 years suggests that individuals typically engage in research for a minimum of 10 years before achieving a significant breakthrough in their respective fields of expertise.

Insufficient funding for research inside our nation is a prevailing concern, as there exists a discernible relationship between the magnitude of resources allocated to research and the overall progress of a country.

The speaker emphasized the importance of allocating a minimum of one percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on research and innovation. However, the current allocation falls significantly short at only 0.1 percent.

Ochefu further asserted that the lack of adequate research facilities over an extended duration, necessary for conducting cutting-edge research, poses a significant obstacle in competing with researchers from other global regions.

The Nobel Prize is a prestigious worldwide award that has been bestowed yearly since 1901 to recognize outstanding accomplishments in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace.

Since its establishment, the Nobel Prizes have been conferred to more than 800 persons.

The recipient of the prestigious 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature is Jon Fosse, a renowned author hailing from Norway. Fosse's notable achievement stems from his exceptional contributions in the realm of literature, particularly through his groundbreaking plays and prose. His works have been widely recognized for their remarkable ability to articulate and convey the ineffable aspects of human experience.

In 1986, Wole Soyinka, a Nigerian writer, achieved the distinction of becoming the inaugural African recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
